Ashford Castle
Situated on the shore of Lough Corrib this magnificent medieval castle is now a five star hotel. It was built in the 13th century by the Anglo-Norman De Bugos family following their defeat of the O’ Connor’s of Connaught. In 1852 Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness purchased Ashford and was used as a country get-away for the Guinness family. Then in 1939 it was restored and turned into one of Irelands most elite and luxurious hotels.
The grounds of this breathtaking building are seeped with history as they have been recorded in Irish history since the second century, around eleven centuries before the castle was actually built.
The interior of the castle is just as spectacular than the exterior with luxuriously decorated rooms and ornately crafted furniture. The rooms are high and spacious with rich and comfortable furnishings, some including four-poster beds and bathrooms with pedestal claw baths. Each room has a view of the beautiful and peaceful surroundings including the magical Lough Corrib, the wooded parkland and the River Cong . Every room is exceptional, as a designer who has kept the history alive within Ashford Castle has individually designed them.
To match its impeccable reputation it has one of Europe’s best Salmon and Brown Trout fisheries. The lake itself is opened to the public and local fishing guides can be booked at the porter or activities desk within the castle itself. It also boasts the Dungeon Bar where evening entertainment includes resident harpist, balladeer and storyteller.
The George V dining room gives an opportunity to dine with elegance, excellent service and superb views across the river. Fancy a nightcap? Then the Prince of Wales Cocktail Bar will certainly relax you with the comfortable furnishings and a fantastic warm ambiance.
Other activities which the castle has includes two all weather courts available exclusively to guests, A golf Course which was designed by renowned golfer Eddie Hackett. An exercise facility with state of the art, computerized equipment, and of course over 3000 acres of beautiful forested country for both experienced and novice riders.
