Castle Durrow

It was formerly the home of the Flower family and was built in the early 18th century (1712-1715) when domestic architecture in Ireland was developing and independence of the need for defense and economy.

Castle Durrow is one of the first country-house of importance that still stands close to its original condition is one of the few 18th century country houses, for which the building records still survive.

The construction of the Durrow castle began after the Cromwellian and Williamite wars, which, resulted in a new protestant aristocracy that was starting to enjoy the lands that they had inherited. The fashion of the new era was dictated to separate agriculture from class and so elegant mansions were built so that they would not resemble the typical farmhouse in anyway.

Colonel Flower resumed construction of the castle in 1712 and the Flower family resided there in 1716 until 1922 when the Flower family hit financial trouble and had to return to England. It was then sold to Mr. Maher of Freshford, whose main interest was in rich timber reserves. By 1928 the old wood which, surround castle Durrow was scarce.

In 1929 the castle was transformed into St Fintan’s College and Convent. Then in 1998, Shelley Stokes who continued to restore it into a luxurious castle hotel purchased it. It has now been listen in Irelands Blue Book, a guide for elegant accommodation and dining.
