Medieval Bunratty Castle

Bunratty Medieval castles in IrelandLocated in County Clare Bunratty castle had its first dwellings on the site since 970, the time of the Vikings. It stayed very much a dwelling place for them until 1270 when Robert De Muscegros built the first defensive fortress also know as a Motte and Bailey. Castle. After some years the land was then passed onto Thomas De Clare who built the first stone edifice on the site. At that time Bunratty was now growing in numbers and had a population of 1,000. During the Irish Bruce Wars (1315-1318) the castle was completely destroyed, however in 1332 the King of England restored the castle. Once again, it was eradicated by the Irish Chieftains of Thomond. It was rebuilt and destroyed once more. As you see Bunratty Castle today it was the MacNamara who completed it in 1425 only to have it passed onto the most powerful clan in Munster, The O’Brien’s, 50 years later.

Today this magnificent structure is a very popular tourist attraction, a lot to do with the fact that it is quite close to the airport. Inside the castle it is decorated with huge tapestries and artifacts dating back to the eras of the castles history (however, none of the artifacts belong to the castle itself). Visitors can visit the ‘Great Half’, the dungeons, or climb the spiral stairs to the four towers. There is also a medieval style banquet that takes place twice every evening in the castle, although to take place in the banquets one must make a reservation.

Bunratty also has a Folk Park which is a must see as it gives visitors an opportunity to experience life in urban and rural Ireland in the 19th century, for example they can view farmhouses of various economic backgrounds, a watermill, a church and a village street which is kept alive by some of the shops being inhabited. A Traditional Irish Night takes place in the Corn Barn of the folk park and this includes traditional Irish music, song and dance, it guarantee’s a good night, the Irish way!

Bunratty Castle is a must see for any visitor as it captures the essence Irish history and brings it to life. A truly great experience for anyone of any age!
