Ballymore Castle

The Ballymore Castle is located in Lawrencetown, County Galway, Ireland and was primitively a Madden tower house during 15th century, a house was added to the property in 1620 and has been greatly reformed since.

In 1585 Ballymore Castle was founded and built by a man named John Lawrence. He derived the land when he was married to O'Madden, Lord of Longford's daughter. During wars that followed his inheritance the castle was immensely damaged and repaired and updated by his son Walter Lawrence in 1620. A portion of the land and the castle was given to Sir Thomas Newcomen and was leased to the Lawrence family for many years and with Thomas' death his stepson inherited the castle and sold it to John Eyre of Eyrecouty in the early 1700's, approximately 1720's.

The Seymour family settled in the castle around year 1700 and during this time the castle was renovated and a rather large house was added to the property in 1815. The land and its rights where purchased by Thomas Seymour and they owned the castle until the early years of this century. A relative of the Seymour family, Mrs. Hale inherited the estate. By this time the estate had become somewhat smaller due to a large part of the land being given to the Irish Land Commission.
